This past May Freddie Bryant had us bouncing with his “dexterous solos” and “impressive chops” playing with Akua Dixon here at Jazz in GTown. He will return this fall to treat us to a fabulous night of Brazilian music with vocalist Vanessa Falabella, percussionist Sergio Krakowski, and himself on guitar.
Freddie is a skilled jazz and classical guitarist and composer. His interests and talents encompass music from around the world and he has collaborated and toured with African singer Salif Keita, klezmer clarinetist Giora Feldman, Indian sitarist Shubhendra Rao, Kenyan singers, traditional groups in Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E, and eight-time Grammy Award winner Eliane Elias.
Monk Restrung, Freddie’s new CD, will be released on Thelonius Monk’s 99th birthday, October 10. The CD release party will follow at Dizzy’s in November.
Vanessa Falabella was voted Best Brazilian Singer in the United States by the Brazilian Press Awards 2016. She grew up in Brazil surrounded by a family of painters, artists and writers and began singing and acting as a child. “There were so many influences and music around me and I wanted to learn everyone’s sound.” A trained mezzo-soprano, Vanessa has sung, recorded and performed with musicians of many "sounds", including Gato Barbieri, Sadao Watanabe and The Platters and performed in Carnegie Hall and top jazz clubs in Japan, Thailand, Chile, Spain. . .
“Percussion Explorer Sergio Krakowski,” is a pandeiro player without equal. He evokes nuances in this traditional Brazilian tambourine that create a new sound for the musicians, no matter the genre, and audience alike. Sergio’s PhD in Computer Music (his Bachelors degree was in math) turned into Talking Drums commissioned by the NY Council on the Arts, which he presented at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, in Brazil, as well as New York City. He has been involved in many projects — musical, electronic, and visual — with David Binney, Anat Cohen, and Cyro Baptista, Sergio Krakowski Trio - The Foundation of the Island was released in May.
"Freddie Bryant has a taste for diverse musical adventures . . . he renews his romance with the music of Sourth America, succesfully melding his superb classical technique with the explosive rhythms of Brazil. Bryant is joined by . . . some of New York's hottest young jazz and Latin musicians , , , together they create a mood of lush, tropical splendor that bridges the gulf between the worlds of jazz, clasical and Brazilian music."
